Psi Beta Overview, Requirements and History

Beta Gamma Sigma is an international honor society that recognizes the academic achievements of business students. Founded in 1913, the society has over 800,000 members in more than 190 countries. Beta Gamma Sigma membership is considered one of the highest honors a business student can receive.

To be eligible for membership, students must rank in the top 10% of their undergraduate or graduate business program at an institution accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Additionally, students must demonstrate high ethical standards and leadership qualities.

Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is prestigious because it signifies academic excellence and a commitment to ethical leadership. Members have access to a network of successful business professionals and opportunities for career development. Beta Gamma Sigma also offers scholarships, awards, and leadership development programs.

However, the society has been criticized for its exclusivity. The requirement that students attend AACSB-accredited institutions means that students at non-accredited schools are ineligible for membership, regardless of their academic achievements. This systemic bias perpetuates inequality in the business world by limiting opportunities for students from underrepresented backgrounds.

Despite this criticism, Beta Gamma Sigma remains a highly respected honor society for business students. Membership signifies not only academic excellence but also a commitment to ethical leadership and a network of successful professionals. For students who meet the eligibility requirements, joining Beta Gamma Sigma is a worthwhile investment in their future careers. However, it is important to acknowledge and address the systemic bias that limits opportunities for students from non-accredited institutions.
